Updated 2025-10-31. Numbers and descriptions here follow the published literature rather than marketing material.
The sequence contains an unusually high proportion of proline and glycine, which limits regular secondary structure and contributes to solubility in aqueous media. The compound dissolves readily in water and in normal saline. Because it is a peptide, digestive enzymes are expected to break it down if it is swallowed, a consideration that influences the routes of administration used in animal experiments. Detailed conformational data remain limited, and published structural models are largely computational.
BPC 157 is a synthetic peptide built from fifteen amino acids. The letters stand for body protection compound, and the number is a laboratory code rather than a description of any biological feature. Its single-letter sequence is GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, which corresponds to a calculated mass near 1419.5 daltons. The material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis and is distributed as a lyophilized powder, not as a purified extract from a natural source.
Most early work on this peptide originated in the 1990s from a research group in Zagreb, Croatia, relying on animal models and cell cultures. Reported observations included effects on gastrointestinal lesion healing, tendon fibroblast migration, and blood vessel formation under controlled laboratory conditions. These findings come predominantly from rodent studies and in vitro assays rather than from human trials. Controlled human data remain limited, and the degree to which animal results translate to human physiology is an open question rather than a settled fact.
Within the research literature, the peptide is discussed through several provisional mechanisms, including cytoprotection, modulation of growth factor signaling, and interaction with the nitric oxide system. None of these mechanisms is fully characterized, and no single pathway is universally accepted. Review articles typically note the gap between consistent animal findings and sparse human evidence. The compound is classified as a research chemical rather than an approved pharmaceutical, which shapes how studies are designed, funded, and reported.

Proposed mechanisms include interaction with the nitric oxide system, modulation of growth factor signaling, and effects on blood vessel formation. None of these has been established as the primary mode of action, and some proposed pathways rest on indirect measurements. Whether the reported effects depend on a specific receptor has not been determined. Stability in gastric acid, unusual for a peptide of this size, is also reported in animal work, but the reason for it is not firmly established.
Published studies on BPC-157 are dominated by animal models. Commonly used endpoints include healing of surgically induced lesions in the stomach, tendon-to-bone attachment after transection, and recovery from experimentally induced vascular or intestinal damage. Many of these reports come from a small number of research groups, and the peptide is often described as acting across a wide range of tissue types. That breadth is itself a point of discussion, since one molecule influencing many unrelated systems is unusual.
Most published work on BPC-157 comes from animal experiments rather than controlled human trials. Rodent models have examined its effects on gastrointestinal lesions, tendon and ligament injury, and blood vessel formation. These studies are often small and originate from a limited number of research groups, which affects how broadly the findings can be generalized. No large randomized human trial has been reported in the peer-reviewed literature. Discussion of the compound therefore rests largely on preclinical data, and questions about its effects in people remain open rather than settled.
Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the activity observed in animal models. The most frequently cited involve signaling through vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 and modulation of the nitric oxide system. Researchers have also described interactions with protective pathways in the gut lining. These proposed mechanisms appear in the literature as hypotheses supported by preclinical observations, not as confirmed pathways in humans. The precise way the peptide produces its reported effects, and whether those effects carry across species, remain areas of active and unresolved investigation.
Peptides are susceptible to hydrolysis, oxidation, and aggregation, and BPC-157 is no exception. The lyophilized powder form is generally more stable than a solution because residual moisture is low and molecular mobility is reduced. Once dissolved, the peptide is exposed to water, oxygen, and trace metal ions that accelerate degradation. Light exposure and repeated freeze-thaw cycles are also commonly cited as sources of loss. These general principles guide most handling recommendations found in supplier documentation.
Standard practice for the solid form is storage at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, kept dry and away from light. Containers are usually sealed with a desiccant to limit moisture uptake. Reconstituted solutions are typically held at two to eight degrees Celsius and used within a short window, because potency can decline over days to weeks depending on the buffer and concentration. Freezing an already dissolved sample may help, though repeated thawing is discouraged. Specific shelf-life claims vary between suppliers and are rarely supported by published stability studies.
The peptide was first described in the early 1990s by a group studying gastric secretions and tissue repair. Its fifteen-residue chain is usually written as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV in single-letter code. The free peptide has the formula C62H98N16O22 and a theoretical mass near 1419.5 daltons. These identifiers are established chemical facts that can be checked against standard peptide databases. There is no ambiguity about the primary structure.
Most published findings come from rodent experiments using induced injury or surgical models. Human reports remain scarce and are largely observational, which limits how much can be stated with confidence. Questions about absorption, distribution, metabolism, and clearance in people are still open. Dose translation between species is likewise unresolved. Researchers tend to read the animal literature as a starting point rather than a settled account.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acids. Its sequence corresponds to part of a protein found in human gastric juice, which is the origin of the "body protection compound" label. In laboratory work the material is treated as a defined research chemical rather than a finished product. Published research has centered on animal models, and the peptide is not an approved medicine in most countries.

== Etymology == The word vegetable was first recorded in English in the early 15th century. It comes from Old French, and was originally applied to all plants; the word is still used in this sense in biological contexts. It derives from Medieval Latin vegetabilis "growing, flourishing" (i.e. of a plant), a semantic change from a Late Latin meaning "to be enlivening, quickening". The meaning of "vegetable" as a "plant grown for food" was not established until the 18th century. In 1767, the word was specifically used to mean a "plant cultivated for food, an edible herb or root". The year 1955 saw the first use of the shortened, slang term "veggie". As an adjective, the word vegetable is used in scientific and technical contexts with a different and much broader meaning, namely of "related to plants" in general, edible or not—as in vegetable matter, vegetable kingdom, vegetable origin, etc.
=== Season 1 === At the Great Council of 101 AC, King Jaehaerys I Targaryen's eldest male descendant Prince Viserys Targaryen is chosen to be the heir to the Iron Throne over his eldest descendant Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. In a time skip to the ninth year of Viserys' reign, his wife Queen Aemma Arryn is pregnant with a son, having experienced several previous miscarriages. At a great tournament celebrating the impending birth of Viserys' son, the Hand of the King Ser Otto Hightower warns Viserys against making his brutish younger brother Prince Daemon Targaryen his heir over his daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, but Viserys ignores Otto's advice. Viserys departs the tourney to be present as Aemma gives birth, but finds Aemma and the baby's lives to be at risk. He authorizes Grand Maester Mellos to perform a caesarian section in order to save the baby, completely aware that the procedure will kill Aemma. Aemma dies in agony giving birth to their son Baelon, who passes away a day later in infancy. Otto has his daughter Lady Alicent Hightower console Viserys, and informs the small council that Daemon drunkingly referred to the deceased Baelon as "the heir for a day". An enraged Viserys confronts Daemon, who complains that he never had any support for him and insults Viserys as a weak king who is easily manipulated by Otto and his circle. He exiles Daemon to the Vale to consummate his marriage to Lady Rhea Royce, and removes Daemon's status as Viserys' heir with Rhaenyra.

Their first son Prince Aegon was born in 120 AC, while their second son was born in 122 AC and named after Viserys. In 126 AC, Rhaenyra requested that Luke be recognized as the heir to Driftmark, which several members of House Velaryon protested under the accusation that he was not Laenor's son. As Viserys angrily ordered their tongues to be cut out, he slipped and cut his hand on the Iron Throne, a severe injury that gave him a fever from infection. Some maesters feared that he would die, but Viserys lived after two of his fingers were removed by Maester Gerardys, and he would never sit on the Iron Throne again. Gerardys was recommended by Rhaenyra as a replacement for the dead Grand Maester Mellos, while Alicent recommended Maester Alfador, her family's maester. Viserys decided to appoint neither man as Grand Maester and deferred to the Citadel to fill the office, who chose Maester Orwyle. As Viserys' health gradually weakened, Otto filled the small council with members loyal to the greens, including Lord Larys Strong, Ser Tyland Lannister, and Ser Jasper Wylde. Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Criston Cole was also an ardent supporter of Alicent, with Orwyle being politically neutral and Lord Lyman Beesbury opposing the greens. Viserys passed away in his sleep in 129 AC, having been discovered by a servant who informed Alicent of his status. In the interim, Alicent did not disclose Viserys' death to the public and summoned the small council to a secret meeting.
Obsidian (, əb-SID-ee-ən ob-) is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is an igneous rock. Produced from felsic lava, obsidian is rich in the lighter elements such as silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium. It is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows. These flows have a high content of silica, giving them a high viscosity. The high viscosity inhibits the diffusion of atoms through the lava, which inhibits the first step (nucleation) in the formation of mineral crystals. Together with rapid cooling, this results in a natural glass forming from the lava. Obsidian is hard, brittle, and amorphous; it therefore fractures with very sharp edges. In the past, it was used to manufacture cutting and piercing tools, and it has been used experimentally as surgical scalpel blades.
== Enzyme regulation == NADP-ME expression has been shown to be regulated by abiotic stress factors. For CAM plants, drought conditions cause stoma to largely remain shut to avoid water loss by evapotranspiration, which leads to CO2 starvation. In compensation, closed stoma activates the translation of NADP-ME to reinforce high efficiency of CO2 assimilation during the brief intervals of CO2 intake, allowing for carbon fixation to continue. In addition to regulation at the longer time scale by means of expression control, regulation at the short-time scale can occur through allosteric mechanisms. C4 NADP-ME has been shown to be partially inhibited by its substrate, malate, suggesting two independent binding sites: one at the active site and one at an allosteric site. However, the inhibitory effect exhibits pH-dependence – existent at a pH of 7 but not a pH of 8. The control of enzyme activity due to pH changes align with the hypothesis that NADP-ME is most active while photosynthesis is in progress: Active light reactions leads to a rise in basicity within the chloroplast stroma, the location of NADP-ME, leading to a diminished inhibitory effect of malate on NADP-ME and thereby promoting a more active state. Conversely, slowed light reactions leads to a rise in acidity within the stroma, promoting the inhibition of NADP-ME by malate. Because the high energy products of the light reactions, NADPH and ATP, are required for the Calvin cycle to proceed, a buildup of CO2 without them is not useful, explaining the need for the regulatory mechanism.

Affinity purification coupled to mass spectrometry mostly detects stable interactions and thus better indicates functional in vivo PPIs. This method starts by purification of the tagged protein, which is expressed in the cell usually at in vivo concentrations, and its interacting proteins (affinity purification). One of the most advantageous and widely used methods to purify proteins with very low contaminating background is the tandem affinity purification, developed by Bertrand Seraphin and Matthias Mann and respective colleagues. PPIs can then be analysed by mass spectrometry using different methods: chemical incorporation, biological or metabolic incorporation (SILAC), and label-free methods. Furthermore, network theory has been used to study the whole set of identified protein–protein interactions in cells.
=== Sports === Current evidence-based studies show that unusually high levels of circulating testosterone are associated with increased athletic performance in women, unless they lack androgen sensitivity. However, controversy has emerged in the form of the claim that testosterone is not unlike any other physical parameter with reference to bestowing advantages or disadvantages on female athletes. Existing regulations throughout competitive sports are currently being refined to specifically address this particular claim. Following the case of South African athlete Caster Semenya, an athlete with a difference in sex development (DSD) and internal testes, the International Association of Athletics Federations introduced its hyperandrogenism regulations, which restricted those registered as women with high testosterone levels, whether the hormones were produced by ovaries, adrenals, or testes. These regulations replaced the earlier sex verification rules. Following a series of legal challenges, regulations called the Eligibility Regulations for the Female Classification (Athletes with Differences of Sexual Development) were released on 1 May 2019. These regulations apply only to athletes who have a DSD, high testosterone and virilization, and no longer include hyperandrogenism from non-DSD-related causes such as PMOS. Such DSDs, often seen in people who have a Y chromosome and testes, include 5α‐reductase deficiency, partial androgen insensitivity, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
In 1981, the PLA conducted its largest military exercise in North China since the founding of the People's Republic. In the late 1980s, the central government had increasing expenditures and limited revenue. The central government encouraged its agencies and encouraged local governments to expand their services and pursue revenues. The PLA established businesses including hotels and restaurants. The PLA gained more autonomy and permission to engage in commercial activities in exchange for a reduced role in political affairs and limited budgets; the military was downsized to free resources for economic development. The lack of oversight, ineffective self-regulation, and Jiang Zemin's and Hu Jintao's lack of close personal ties to the PLA led to systemic corruption that persisted through the late-2010s. Jiang's attempt to divest the PLA of its commercial interests was only partially successful, as many were still run by close associates of PLA officers. Corruption lowered readiness and proficiency, was a barrier to modernization and professionalization, and eroded party control. The 2010s anti-corruption campaigns and military reforms under Xi Jinping from the early-2010s were in part executed to address these problems. Following the PLA's suppression of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre, ideological correctness was temporarily revived as the dominant theme in Chinese military affairs.
==== United States ==== The first approved PSMA imaging agent was indium-111 (111In) capromab pendetide (branded Prostascint). It received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 1996. However, the agent had poor sensitivity and saw little widespread use. The first PET PSMA imaging agent, 68Ga-PSMA-11, was approved by the FDA in 2020. Listed indications include suspected metastasis prior to initial treatment, and recurrence of prostate cancer (based on elevated serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level). It is a synthetic peptide. Its design was inspired by a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice, but the fifteen-amino-acid molecule itself is made in a laboratory and is not a normal component of food or of human tissue in appreciable amounts.
The number is an internal laboratory designation from the research group that first described the fragment. It does not encode a molecular weight, a receptor target, or a measured biological effect, and it carries no meaning outside the naming history of the compound.
It contains fifteen amino acid residues and has a calculated mass of roughly 1419.5 daltons. That places it in the short-peptide range, well below the size of small proteins, which affects how it is synthesized, purified, and analyzed.
The sequence corresponds to a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice, so related sequences are natural. The isolated fifteen-amino-acid peptide supplied for research is produced synthetically. Whether the free fragment circulates naturally in humans has not been settled.
